Hello quilting friends!
I read something very interesting on a
website the other day about a Japanese ceremony called Hari-kuyou
that I would like to share with you. Held on February 8 each year
Hari-kuyou is a religious practice in which Japanese needleworkers,
kimono seamsters and needlework schools take their old or broken needles
stuck in soft tofu to the Shinto shrine to show appreciation to the
needles which have been stuck through hard substances. They pray for
improvement in their skills during this ritual.
Needles became commonly used in the 14th century and, at this time,
needles were precious and used with special care. This
probably led to the idea of doing "kuyou" for the needles in
order to "calm the spirit and put them to rest". Some Japanese needle workers
show appreciation by simply not doing any needlework on that day,
thereby giving their needles a holiday. I certainly appreciate the
joy my needles give me and hope that my sewing skills improve as I work them along in my
projects! What a great invention!
